Stämm at BioSpain 2026: Benchtop Biomanufacturing in Bilbao

From September 29 to October 1, Bilbao hosted BioSpain 2026, the 13th edition of the biotechnology event organized by AseBio together with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the Basque Government, and the Basque Health Cluster. Stämm was there: Faith Wallace-Gadsden, our Chief Strategy Officer, attended and brought material about the High-Throughput Bioprocessor (HTB) and the Bubble-Free Bioreactor (BFB).

What was on the table in Bilbao

The program was built around four tracks: Policy, Health, Bioeconomy, and Finance. Topics included European competitiveness and strategic autonomy in biotechnology, advanced therapies and precision medicine, artificial intelligence in biomedical research, technology transfer, and advanced manufacturing. The United Kingdom was the guest nation, and among the first confirmed keynotes was Juan Bueren, of CIEMAT, on the potential of advanced therapies.

Why we were there

Advanced therapies and advanced manufacturing, two of the program’s themes, are exactly where cell culture is decided: how much it costs, how much manual work it takes, and how close to the lab it can happen. That is the problem Stämm goes after with automated, nature-inspired platforms, and Europe is part of our map: we have a team in Monthey, Switzerland.

What we brought

The HTB and the BFB are on sale for research use only (RUO): they are not for diagnostic or clinical use. The HTB is a benchtop bioreactor with continuous perfusion that runs up to three production units in parallel, and the BFB is the single-use cartridge, with no bubbles or impellers. We designed them with GMP in mind, and that path is on our roadmap.
